Chelsea FC to sign Cristiano Ronaldo

…is one of many headlines you almost certainly won’t be reading on Chelsea’s official Twitter profile which launched yesterday.

The club has been active in recent years in bringing breaking news to its fan base ahead of the mass media and has done so through its Chelsea TV.

It's early days I know but so far I have to say it’s latest new media effort is dull reading. To save you the trouble here are some errr…highlights:

Not that this tedium is stopping our sports press from sniffing around for a story. In the first few hours Stamford the Lion, the Chelsea mascot who writes the official miniblog, noted that 'there seem to be a couple of journalists following my Twitter, no doubt hoping for a few lines for a story.'

They might be waiting a long time.

Brands understand the passion of international sport. Daily Telegraph readers it seems do not.

Brands are drawn to sports for the same reasons the fans are.

It’s about elite performance, it’s about the competition, it’s about the drama and above all it’s about the passion. And where international sports are involved its about national pride.

National pride doesn’t mean being right-wing or racist – it’s simply pride in your nation.

Fuller's get it. The brewer runs great ads, by DCH, with emotive words from Shakespeare’s Henry V: ‘Once more unto the breach dear friends. Once more’. Stirring stuff.

The BBC even get it. It’s ads tell viewers that in the 6 Nations you don’t play the team, you play the nation.

But, it would seem, some Daily Telegraph readers just don't get it.

After the mediocrity of the past 1,2,3,4,5…6 years (yes, it really has been that long) England’s mauling of the French last week should have brought universal outburst of euphoria and optimism. Not so.

The players exuberant try celebrations were ‘grotesque displays of trumphalism’ to one reader. ‘The extravagant behaviour of some England players at Twickenham last week directly reflectss the extravagance of their new strip’, whimpers Vincent Gormally of Parbold, Lancashire.

Hardly. That Delon Armitage would kiss the English rose after scoring a great try against our arch rivals is hardly a hanging offence.

Let’s face it – it was not comparable to the increasingly ridiculous Robinho kissing the Manchester City badge after scoring against Chelsea just days after accidentally declaring his joy at signing for Chelsea….errr Manchester City. D’oh.

What is Luiz Filipe Scolari's football IQ?

Watching Chelsea labour brainlessly to a home draw against Hull City on Saturday it dawned on quite a few of us in attendance that perhaps Luiz Felipe Scolari doesn’t know what he’s doing – and some decided to let him know as much.

So the timing of Electronic Arts' announcement that the affable Brazilian will play a starring role in its latest release – Football Academy – by offering gamers ‘hints and tips on how to become a true football expert’ is unfortunate to say the least.

The new title, available on the Nintendo DS from March, enables gamers to play 14 mini games that test football knowledge – from identifying players and teams to understanding formations – in order to discover their football IQ.

Now, when Nintendo introduced Nicole Kidman as an ambassador for its Brain Training game viewers were shown the actresses ‘Brain Age’ which improved dramatically through practise between the ad and its follow up some months later.

Will EA tell us Scolari’s football IQ? I do hope so but I’m guessing not.

Abramovich, Pavlychenko and Arshavin are all crooks - or at least that's what these New York City detectives seem to think

Do those American TV drama writers know something we don’t?

It would appear fans of London clubs Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal should be concerned about the activities of their Russians – Roman Abramovich, Roman Pavlychenko and Andrei Arshavin.

It's not just the players that need to show respect

The FA's ‘Respect' campaign, which discourages footballers from arguing back to the referee, is doomed to failure so long as the man in charge of the country's biggest club fails to control his players.

The ‘Respect' campaign is a great idea. Unless a player is superhumanly dim, they will soon learn to keep their mouth shut - or face continual suspension. Simple.

But for all the marketing investment by the FA, media attention and endorsement by the game's leading figures the campaign will fail if undermined by its top managers.

Fresh from lambasting Premier League head of referees, Keith Hackett for overturning a red card awarded to Chelsea's John Terry last week, which enabled the player to face United, Alex Ferguson watched his players follow each other into the referee's notebook like lemmings falling off a cliff.

Match referee Mike Riley - the man who suffered such a torrent of abuse from Chelsea's Ashley Cole last march that the FA's Respect campaign was thrust into the headlines - should be applauded for finally putting his foot down and saying enough is enough.

A manager imposes his will and personality on his team through his choices of players and through what he demands of them on and off the field. This is especially true when a manager has been at a club as long as Sir Alex.

Ferguson is far from being the only guilty manager. But he has unparalleled stature and influence - and therefore responsibility.

Many footballers should grow up and show some respect to officials, but sometimes so do the men on the touchline who should really know better.

Are Chelsea counting their chickens?

Player shirt sales are an incredibly important source of revenue for football clubs - so much so that it has been argued Real Madrid only bought David Beckham for his commercial value. The England footballer accounted for around half of the club's shirt sales during his time there.

But before you start flogging shirts at over £50 a pop to fans, it's best to make sure you've actually got the player among your ranks... A few years back a few silly sods bought themselves Manchester United shirts with the name Ronaldinho on the back - only for the Brazilian superstar to head for Barcelona.
