Advertising to children

Im doing a thesis in the effects of advertising to children and was wondering your views on this. What effects do you think adverts have on children and do you think their harmful? Also to what extent do you think pester power if an effective way to encourage parents to purchase products?   Thanks, any help would be appreciated
