What was your favourite film of 2008?

Despite the media downturn, the cinema industry had a good year, with cinema admissions up 1.1% on the previous year and the highest summer admissions since 1969. But which film from the top 10 highest grossing movies of the year in the UK did you enjoy the most?

Which was your favourite film of 2008?

    • Mamma Mia! (7.1%)
    • Quantum of Solace (3.6%)
    • The Dark Knight (28.6%)
    • Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull (1.8%)
    • Sex And The City (8.9%)
    • Hancock (5.4%)
    • Wall-E (16.1%)
    • High School Musical 3 (0%)
    • Kung Fu Panda (1.8%)
    • Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (0%)
    • None of the above (26.8%)
    • Total Votes: 56

I really enjoyed In Bruges, There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men, Frost/Nixon and Gone Baby Gone  - none of which were in the top 10 highest grossing. Wall-E and The Dark Knight were brilliant. Recently saw Slumdog Millionaire, which will take some beating this year.

From that list only Quantum of Solace is worth a vote and even that for me was in substantial - only two thirds of a movie.

    My top ten would be

    No Country for Old Men
    There Will Be Blood
    Cloverfield
    Gone Baby Gone
    In Bruges
    Charlie Wilson's War
How to Lose Friends and Alienate People
    Iron Man
    Juno
    Quantum of Solace

Happy-Go-Lucky, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Body of Lies were also good last year.

This year is already looking better with Vicky Cristina Barcelona,  X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Valkyrie, Star Trek, The Road, the Wrestler and T4 among others.

Dark Knight gets my vote, but not having No Country For Old Men up there is a whopping oversight!

@Richard, I agree NCFOM is a good film but the list compiles the top 10 highest grossing films of the year, of which NCFOM is not one

09 is looking good ... Watchmen looks like very promising and James Cameron will be back with Avatar. Also looking forward to Michael Mann's Public Enemies

Personal fave - Lust Caution, out of the list above Dark Knight (a good Bat film, that)

Can't abide these Bond films, personally - no problem with the main man - he's good - but can't stand the violent action hero direction. I'd rather watch Die Hard.

    - tried Indiana Jones twice - and couldnt get past half way without vomiting.

I loved Burn Before Reading because it was a return to the Big Lebowski style for the Coens.

@Art Garfunkel, I thought BRB was a bit of a disappointment. It had some good moments but didn't hang together and it ended on a whimper rather than a bang IMHO. Brad Pitt was the best thing in it.

There were so many its hard to choose. I thought the Lives of others and Female Agents were great. I also absolutely loved the dark knight. There are so many fantastic films on at the moment - and this year looks great too.

@Nicola, The Lives of Others was great but it came out in 2007!

I enjoyed Hancock as, unusually for a mainstream Hollywood film, the storyline was filled with surprises...

I have to say that, upon seeing the Dark Knight, I was very disappointed.  Yes, Heath was fun and the action was entertaining but the storyline was muddled and the main moral message completely weird!!

    Sorry!

Re: What was your favourite film of 2008?

@Rebecca, Hancock was fun and original for the first hour but when the twist involving Charlize Theron happens, it really loses its way. I thought The Dark Knight had some spectacular action set-pieces, and yes Heath was brilliant, but it was too dark, too long and I agree about the muddled storyline. From the top 10 highest grossing list, I thought Wall-E was the best film and I have a feeling people will still be talking about it in 25 years time.

my choice is slightly more obscure but it gets my vote for humour, the stunning setting of the french riviera and the amazing outfits. My fave was 'Priceless' - the french film starring Audrey Tatou (from Amelie).
