    Music at work place

Is it normal to have radio blaring out music all day long at work?

Depends what you mean by blaring. A little background music is felt to be a good thing in my office - always has been in agencies I've worked at. Blaring is another matter altogether, especially if the music in question is 'R&B'. We've got rock, heavy rock, nu rock, emo, screamo, nu rave, indie, thrash, rap, gangsta rap, soul (both US and northern england) country, folk and a whole bunch of strange things inbetween, but NO 'R&B' and not blaring (afterall, how would we make all those new business calls!?!?).

R&B could spice up some of those cold calls..

Respect for at least givin it a shot. I can't see how emo is going to make getting new business any easier though..

It makes success sweeter and disappointment...well...less disappointing (and the techies love it)

headphones, internet radio and/or mp3 players are the way forward - keep it personal. I found everyone is far more motivated when listening to their favourite tunes makes them happier, harder working and less distracted by colleagues' conversations.

This avoids upsetting your colleagues by subjecting them to banging music which you and others may think is the best thing since Bros but I've been on the other side of this. Being subjected to loud music that doesn't float your boat (in my case R&B, or rap and bulls&*t as I call it) is enough to drive anybody nuts and reduce productivity in the office....

My office has capital radio playing all through the day.

I have bought ear plugs+ear muffs and they work well in combination.  So problem solved actually

Does 'letting you be you' also include popping in late everyday at work ;-)

RCMJDR, I think two people into advertising or marketing can have same initials. I don't intend to disclose my identity but definitely I am not the rejected object of any stormy evening  :-)

Would you mind elaborating on RCMJDR please?

Background music is ok, but blaring music all day long, especially if it's not to your taste, is annoying.

Have you tried singing along loudly? It might be quite catharthic and you might annoy people enough for the radio to be turned down.

But there are people worse off than you-I remember when I went to Japan, there was a department store which played the same marching song all day long. Every day. Imagine the poor people who work there.

    >That made me smile.!  And yes it is true. Don't they have aromatherapy and classical music on the subway in Japan?

Ooh, I don't know. Do they? It's possible, but then again, you have to be careful not to believe everything they say about Japan. Some people will have you believe that you can buy prostitutes from vending machines over there...

What they do have on the tube over there are boxes marked on platforms indicating where the tube doors will be when the train arrives. This means that if there's overcrowding and you can't get on the first few trains, eventually you'll be at the front of the queue and will be able to get on. In London, you could be waiting for 20 minutes to get on the tube having not been able to board the last 3, and wait right at the front only to find that when the train arrives, you're not where the doors are, and somebody who arrived later and is standing at the back manages to get on cos they happen to be closer to the doors.
