Are you buying an Apple iPhone?

This is easy enough: no chance. Having gone through the hassle of changing networks once why would i do it again. The iPhone looks great, granted, but it is still just another phone. Seriously that's what it is incase anyone out there was confused. Oh yes, it also costs £269, which a culture where phones have traditionally been free with contracts could be a huge stumbling block for all but those diehard Apple fans.

£269 + a £35 a month contract means that over a year, it's going to cost about £700. For a phone. Before any call charges. Nope, I don't think I'll be getting one. Yes, it looks nice and it's got knobs on. But my money's better spent elsewhere.

No way jose - remember what happened with the ipods? I'll be waiting for the next version, it'll probably work better than this one. I'll leave it to others to be Apple's guinea pigs this time.

Agreed, at present prices I won't be. I have a good phone and camera, more music than I have time to listen to. I'll wait to a friend gets one and try it out...

RE: Are you buying an Apple iPhone?

I'm locked into a contract on a rival network so the decision is out of my hands but I would definitely consider buying an iPhone if I was in the market for a new phone. The touch screen and internet browser innovations look amazing.

Yes the contract is expensive but the cost will come down in time. Only the early adopters will buy one at this stage.

More importantly, I think whether you buy an iPhone or not, it's a watershed moment for mobile phone technology that will benefit everyone as the other handset makers copy and adopt the breakthrough engineering Apple is introducing. Apple is pushing the market forward and that can only be a good thing for all mobile phone owners.

No way would I splash out that sort of money on a gadget. I try and maintain a minimalist approach in my consumerism. I own an iPod Shuffle. After all, you can only listen to one song at a time, so why do you need  several gigs worth a memory to store 10,000 songs? Your computer's hard drive can do that.

I love gadgets but I just got a new Samsung phone and its on an 18 month contract... By the time that runs out maybe the new version of the iPhone will be out and I'll snap it up, hopefully at a cheaper price!

I'm waiting a year. The boss of O2 in the UK says that iPhone will be 3G by then. Plus it'll be cheaper and have more capacity. Plus, maybe it won't be exclusive to O2 by then? Oh well, I can dream...

I bought a 16GB iPod Touch at launch, making the decision not to wait for the iPhone. They're the same price, so you could argue that the iPhone is good value, although it has less memory. More interesting than which, or whether, to buy is the big question - is Apple really committed to breaking into the phone market? Conspiracy theorists say not, that the iPhone is there to please shareholders and keep competitors like Sony Ericsson from making much inroads into Apples dominance in mobile music. A defensive launch, then.

Over time the iPod Touch could be the more interesting device - already WiFi enabled, it is a platform open to third party developers, whereas the iPhone is constrained by the wishes of the network operator. Could the iPod Touch be adapted to make VOIP calls with a Bluetooth headset? Possibly not yet, but 2nd or 3rd generation? That would truly disrupt the mobile operators' market and would make Apple even more legendary among consumers than it is now.

Not yet - but they are extremely beautiful and having played in an Apple store at the weekend I am sorely tempted. But, ultimately my common sense will prevail, that said I am certain to be a buyer when they get it closer to 'right' than it is currently is. ie; when it is cheaper, can go on any network and when it is 3G. I suppose that this might happen in 6-12 months ? I shall keep dreaming - as I said, it is beautiful !!!

Tough call - and I've been an Apple 'evangelist' since 1990. The interface is elegant and a pleasure to use - - Nokia, Samsung, Mototorola et al really do have to get their act together. Bottom line is that if it was not network-exclusive (I'm on Vodafone which has brilliant coverage and customer service is ok when I need to call them) I think I'd get it like a shot. But then I'm a 40-something and don't use all my current 200 minutes and 250 texts. If I was 10+ years younger I would probably think the tariffs are ludicrously expensive for waht you get (free data mitigates this slightly) so I'm worried that it will not do well in Europe till they offer much better tariffs. I bet I still crack and get one though.

    Yes, I am.

RE: Are you buying an Apple iPhone?

No. I'm a bit of a technology Luddite. I use my mobile to make phone calls, my mp3 to listen to music and I watch DVDs at home. A book is still my preferred portable entertainment system.

RE: Are you buying an Apple iPhone?

No. Being a £20 a month tariff-type, the thing is way too expensive for me. I 've tried using my phone as an iPod before and ended up with a flat battery. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful product but why did they give it a pony camera with no flash? I'd much prefer a iPod touch. I could listen to music, watch movies and even do wi-fi without draining my phone juice.
