    Print ads discussion

Why don't print ads get discussed at Brand republic?

why don't you start a thread about one and we'll discuss it.

What do you want to discuss? That so many press ads look like posters? That creatives still love to do press when it's an increasingly weak part of most marketing strategies? Or that the standard of press advertising has collapsed since about 1990?

By the way: I LOVE press ads.

Alright then, as it seems to be a conversation that nobody's interested in, I'll start. The new John Lewis Christmas campaign, shot by Nadav Kander, I believe. Very clever. But not at all festive and therefore a failure. Discuss.

It "mutters" Christmas, doesn't scream it. And the colours are all so dull - unless that's what it looks like in the evening standard.  Subtle to the point of being ashamed of Christmas.

Might not be Christmas but it does attract attention.

I have another topic! how do you like the new virgin ads? I get paid to pout / wax... They are sad!

I think those Virgin posters are real lowest-common-denominator stuff. Crap.

Thanks for the link, RR. That's a really dull commercial. JD's press and posters, while unchanged for a few years now, have some personality at least. That's the power of the written word! (Before you ask, I'm not a writer.)

I've got a question on this:

What do you find more effective at getting a response - the advertorials that try to mimic the style of editorial content, or long copy ads that differentiate themselves visually?
