Can anyone recommend some good University marketing courses?

I'm looking to enrol on a marketing course at University and wondered if anyone could recommend some good courses and universities to look at?

I'd also like to hear from anyone who is on a course or has completed one and now works in the industry to find out if you think going to university to study marketing is worth it? Some seem to think I'd be better off working my way up through the ranks of an agency from an entry level job with my A'Level grades.

I suggest you work full time, and study part time. You can get a Marketing degree or Chartered Institute of Marketing qualification through part time study. You'll have invaluable experience and be out of debt. Being a graduate, its extremely tough finding a job because of the lack of experience I have. I wish I studied part time.

I agree with Svarowski. You may even be lucky enough to find an employer that will fund your studies or even offer paid day release. I went to uni full time straight from A-levels to achieve a 2:1 BA (Hons) Marketing and found it really tough to get a job in marketing without the experience to back it up. I had to settle for an account management role (in a dull industry) until I managed to get the job I wanted a couple of years later. (I'm now Marketing Manager for Bluhalo, a digital agency)

If it's career rather than qualifications or letters after your name that are important to you, I'd recommend considering the CIM courses - you don't get a degree but you do cover far more practical topics and once you get to the advanced and post grad levels they're considered as good if not better than a degree by many people in the industry.

Hi, I'm doing the Advertising and Marketing Communications degree also, I'm in my final year and it's amazing. The lecturers really do have good, first hand experience and have been in the advertising and marketing industry for years. We've covered literally every aspect of the industry throughout the three years, and although it's been hard work, it's definitely worth it! The course prides itself on being really vocational as well, so although we only get a 6 week summer placement (between the 2nd and 3rd year), all the stuff we learn, is really applicable to when we start work. When it came to our placement, I think a lot of employers were surprised, and impressed, that us students from AMC knew what we were doing and didn't need to be guided as much as past placement students. It's a pretty awesome course, and a lot of employers in the marketing industry recognise this, especially as it's part of the media school, which is the only centre of excellence for media in the UK. Hope this helps. Ryan

     Hi Martin -

I went to Huddersfield University (they have a good business school there). I chose this course as they had the option of a 1 yesar sandwich placement. When looking for jobs in marketing I found that having a year's working experiance really helped me when I came up against that age old argument, experiance versus theory. I was is a position to offer both.

My advice is to check-out universities that offer a placement year as part of your course as it will help you find good marketing jobs when you graduate.

However you can do a straight comparison on universities by looking at the Sunday Times University Guide. This may help your research.

    Best of luck :)

Bournemouth University is the best course for the industry in Europe, if not the world, and the whole industry will tell you that.

Advertising and Marketing Communications is just... great.
