Can new search engine rival Google?

A group of former Google engineers have launched a new search engine called Cuil (pronounced 'Cool') which claims to index three times as many web pages as any other search engine.

Have you tried it? What do you think of Cuil's unique results page which organises search results into groups and categories and displays a photo for each entry? Can Cuil catch Google?

    Can Cuil catch Google?

    • No - No one would've paid Cuil any attention if it wasn't founded by a bunch of former Googlers (61.6%)
    • Yes - Cuil offers something we haven't seen before in search (2.7%)
    • Undecided - Difficult to get used to but I may return to Cuil in the future (35.6%)

Thumbs down from me I'm afraid. Too much black on the homepage and including a picture for each search result is over-complicated and distracting. More importantly, it didn't appear to deliver in terms of search results. It made me realise what makes Google so good, with its much simpler layout, good use of white space and it delivers.

It's like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none, none more black.

It unfortunately doesn't deliver the search results that you're seeking. It comes up with really obscure ones and wastes your time. So in that respect, there's no way it will get anywhere near Google.

If you listen really really carefully, you can actually hear it failing.

It bombed out! The black is errr so NOT GOOGLE! The results are not presented nicely and the searches are not even relevant.

Cuil is just an attempt by Anna Patterson to say "Hello, I'm still here" since quitting Google in 2006. The user interface is not intuitive, the results returned are questionable and matching of images against results is clearly flawed that could be detrimental to a corporate's brand positioning.

Cuil is not cool, it is practically freezing (in more ways than one), and is no competition for Google.

No, it can't - and that's without even having tried it.

Google is such a strong brand it's become a verb. You're not going to replace a verb!

Google will face competition at some point, but I seriously doubt it will come from a search engine as we know them now.

We know what Google does well, how to use it and when to use. Hell, my mom figured Google quicker out than the on/off button on her Apple. Even if a better search engine came along, they'd be fighting an uphill battle. Google are continuously updating their algoritm and improving their search results and experience. Search is where Google rocks and are pretty damn unbeatable....if a serious competitor showed up they have the resources to simply buy their technology.

They've had 10 years of perfecting their algoritm, the resources to keep doing so and buy any interesting start up in sight as well as one of the most powerful brand names in the world right now. How does a start up compete with that?

Re: Can new search engine rival Google?

Right now it is rubbish for all the reasons entered above, but mostly the fact the results it returns are simply nonsense and there is no easy way to scan them.

The results for any search engine query will always be fairly broad so the more results we can quickly scan the more likely we are to find what we are looking for. On this front it fails miserably.

I think Google is still the best. All the rest are just trying hard to be best. Well, let us see in the coming years...which will eventually catch up with Google.

    Dear campaign,

I have just collected some of my piss into a cup. Please run a story next issue regarding my challenge to Coca-Cola.

    Kindest regards,

I think the key here is to wait and see.

It's early days yet and, while at first glance I'm not particularly convinced, Cuil are clearly trying to shake things up a bit.

As long as there are new alternatives to Google's near monopoly on all things search I for one am happy to see where they go with this!
