    RE: Music at work place

I like listening to music in the office, but i find it better to listen through my headphones while everyone else is listening to the continual repetition of the Radio1 playlist (OMG please update it.)  I plug in and listen to radio1xtra,....... yes i said radio1xtra i'm not afraid to admit it for all you rnb/hip hop haters lol!!! I find it helps me concentrate and then when i feel like it i can choose to float in and out of the usual office convo, works a treat!!

Hee Hee ha ha ha! I can't stop grinning! I found a website http://www.prs.co.uk/  which says anyone who plays any music at any type of work place - even if from radio needs to buy a license to play the music. And my company will never shell out the money!

I am waiting to say good bye to the radio!

Yes, PRS - that is the body which collects royalties on behalf of musicians.

You know ? Musicians ? The people who create the 'music' which you so hapily sit there nodding to.

The people you dont want to get paid.

Depends on the type of job ou do.  If it does not distrub your work then it is fine.  Me and my colleagues have the radio playing all day long every day and it does not disturb us.  It might even make our work better as the atmosphere is more relaxed and motivating.

You should only listen to the music when you get board while working. Other wise it is difficult to concentrate on work.

We should also listen to music at work when we're practising our spelling. It's NLP you see.

If a radio is played in a workplace, then that workplace would need a license from PRS/MCPS for the playing of music as it would be a breach of copyright to play the material. The fine for breaches is rather large! I am in the music making world and I am very interested in what has been said regarding what should be played to encourage productivity, while not increasing stress. The problem I have encountered myself years ago in an office is you can't always hear what someone on a phone is saying if music is playing.
This can be addressed by everyone using headphones, though a company would have an expensive route to pipe music to peoples desks. I have been very interested in music psychology too as the sounds that we hear can have a direct effect on our stress levels and our motivation.
In some cases soundtrack style music works well for both in this case as it is not truly new age or relaxation music, but is sparse and funky at the same time. Music like this would be great for a work place as it is a type blank canvass, if you like, but you would need hours of it to make it bearable to all those that work in the environment in which it is played.
Companies that have pop or mainstream music are certainly missing a trick here especially if it is a call centre taking complaints calls etc. Hold music is generally a really poor choice in my opinion and I have looked into supplying music for this purpose without much luck, if anyone knows or is interested please give me a shout...

I hate people listening radio at work, it drives me crazy! But I don't mind people listening stuff with their headphones on - I do it myself, last.fm rox!
