There's been a crime

A crime against the English language.

The poor, innocent unsuspecting words cafe and restaurant did nothing to deserve this, did they?

Even funnier than this was the poster with the caption underneath, that said 'More than a cafe...'

That's all it said. Even though clearly by saying that, it's planting the phrase 'less than a restaurant' into the head of every passer by? and that's not a good thing, is it?

Do you agree that this is an offense, and a bastardisation of English?
Or is it, as Nathalie thinks, 'acceptable because it makes you laugh.’

Running amock with words willy nilly can be embarrassing. But if this kind of thing were frowned upon then I wouldn't be able to use the term 'bromance', which would be very snoring.

It's worst when people automatically use it with couples e.g Branjalina as if they're one person. I would personally absolutely hate that

It's horrible. If it was clever than perhaps it would work, but it's not and as you say it presupposes that it's not good enough to be a restaurant.

This type of vandalism needs to be stopped.

Where is Stephen Fry?, he should be dealing with this sort of thing.

Dear Lol & Nat, The (so-called) typography and design were good enough reasons not to read the pathetic attempt at 'cleverness' in the (so-called) copy in the first place. If the 'English' they serve up is anything to go by, I'm more concerned with what they pass off as food.

Oh my. Seem to have touched a nerve here - especially with you Bob! Nathalie still thinks it is funny rather than anger-inducing. Is no one on her side?

Hi Guys, Don't get me wrong. Yes it's funny. Really. Small businesses do struggle to get noticed so having a bit of fun with the name can work for them. It has as far as we are concerned. Excellent word of mouth debate on a national media site. Free advertising. Well done to....what's their name again?

Of course I'm assuming they call it a 'cafaurant' with a healthy serving of irony. Not like the cafe that I pass everyday that says in all seriousness, 'Today's chef's special - ALL DAY BREAKFAST'. That sign hasn't changed for a year.

You may be right Bob, but I worry that the good people of the quaint town of Lynton in Devon might not be regular readers of Campaign?!

I love those 'specials' signs that never change. You've reminded me of another burning issue that's worse than terrible portmanteau puns - signs that massively overclaim:

Billy Connolly joked of visiting places where the cafes close for lunch. But, god's honest truth, I know one. It's in Ingatestone in Essex. It's part of the village bakery. It opens at around 8am for breakfast, brunch and cooked meals. Then at midday, they rope it off and hang up a closed sign. I asked why the cafe bit was shut. They looked at me as if I was stupid and said, "We get far to many people in here at lunchtime to have it open, dear"!

Classic.

@Bob

Yes that's probably the same reason that doctor's surgerys don't open on saturdays, because you know, too many people would want to use it.

iIs funny. cute in a sense.  Aren't we reading a little too much into it. As Lol says its a 'quaint' little town that I would imgaine never thought that such a debate would occur.  On the contrary I imagine the 'genius' of this creation was congratulated with a pat on the back, a nudge on the chin and pint of the finest local ale......
