Bangkok Blues

My beloved Manchester City are just about to be taken over by former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra it has been reported today. Coincidentally, I happen to be in Bangkok and it seems very odd seeing my teams colours splashed all over the Bangkok Post. But maybe I shouldn't be that surprised. After all, the Premiership is as popular in Thailand as satay.

Ask most Thais about football and they are likely to rattle off the names of at least 3 English teams they support (almost inevitably it will include Man United). I suspect if the deal does go through with the mighty Blues then we might have a 'proper' Manchester team being mentioned out here more readily (can't wait for some comments from a few Newton Heath supporters on the back of that !).

Thai television broadcasts over 500 live games a year. The cable channel Truevision screens all the Premier League games plus selected games from La Liga and the Bundesliga. But it's the EPL which is by far the most popular.

It's estimated that 14 billion baht (around 200 million quid) is bet on football each year in Thailand... despite the fact that gambling on sport is illegal over here.

Ever wondered why Chang lager sponsor Everton, despite the fact that it's distribution in the UK is relatively low ? Well, now you know.

As for City, there was some other front page news in the Bangkok Post today which may curtail my enthusiasm. Thaksin was formally indicted for corruption and most of his assets have been frozen. Ah. Well, maybe he has the 82 million pounds he has offered for the club hidden under his mattress ?

My question is whether Thaksin will be judged a "fit and proper" director by the Premier League .... or would it expose some of his fellows in the same vein ?! There is little to doubt where the money has come from ... will he/can he turn another trick at Man City and double his return .. Lets see.

Hi Steve. Having laid your blue nose credentials on the line in your opening gambit, I was somewhat surprised to see you take an entire paragraph to mention Manchester's pre-eminent club, which by the way is supported by around 60% of Mancunians. With that far away posting, you must be losing your bitter edge. I jest, of course, but the joke's on all us football supporters now. How hollow do our tribal rants sound now that our clubs are being taken up just about every orifice possible, morning noon and night? The game has become driven by nothing but sickeningly malevolent greed. And the real shame of it that so few fans are bothering to do anything about it. MUST --- FC United: Viva la revolucion!

Hi Simon, not sure about the stats (60% ???)but I agree with everything else you say (can I really be agreeing with a Man United fan ?!). The EPL is slowly being taken over by foreign investors and will soon resemble the British car industry. The best bits (like Mini, Range Rover, Jaguar, Bentley, Rolls Royce etc.) all being run by the rest of the World. It's not right. ps. 1-0 to the Mighty Blues and Uniteds worst start to a season for over a decade thanks to our new Svengali ! (sorry Simon, couldnt resist !!!)
