Allow me to ask a rude question.....

One of the problems with account people is that their entire mental universes are constructed upon the whims of their clients.

Q. How many account people does it take to change a lightbulb?

A. How many would you like?

Now I'd like to ask a simple question. The kind of question which should be asked of procurement people but never is. Here goes.

Let's accept for the purposes of argument that agencies are often quite inefficient at what they do. In a simple ratio, please write below (anonymously if you like) what proportion of this waste you believe to be the product of an agency's internal mismanagement compared to the waste which results from inefficiencies in the client approval process.

Here is a second question. If a friend of yours who drives a Hummer complains about the cost of petrol, what do you say?

I would say, driving a Hummer or not, you don't rule the price of petrol... the government does... One of the reason I don't have a car

In response to the first question, while I am not in a position to provide insight into the running of an agency, I believe that inefficient management systems are an unfortunate factor that exist in many, if not most, large organisations. Maintaining a clear channel of communication while enabling feedback and improvement suggestions to filter up the management hierarchy structure will help keep everyone informed. Theory and practice differ greatly though, as always. With regard to the Hummer, well I'd say that anyone who buys one without consideration for the running costs is perhaps a tad short sighted. A large corporation often doesn't start out with such large (and expensive) middle management structures, unlike a big car which will drink petrol at 5mpg the second you turn the key. Of course, with such large operations come lucrative economies of scale. I will still be thinking about this over my Corn Flakes tomorrow. Simon.

Presumably with regards to the first, account people are put in that unenviable position because advertising is currently a buyers market. My agency pisses me off - no worries - I'll go next door and they'll do an equally good job for me and probably at a lower price. I can't imagine any account person goes into the business hpoing to kowtow to very client demand but the nature of the industry is such that clients hold all the bargaining power. Perhaps the answer is for creatives to attend more budget planning meetings and discussions with procurement. The answer to the second is, "you're quite right sir, the price of petrol is far too high not because it is a scarce resource but because it is an easy source of revenue for greedy politicians. The cost of petrol is now 70% tax - you're quite right Hummer owner, it's a disgrace.

How many ECD's does it take to change a light bulb? A: Nobody knows. They don't last as long as light bulbs.

Presumably my friend drives a Hummer to attract attention and to make right other "short" falls ; in which case I'd point out to my friend what a lucky guy he was, his previously overt display of wealth and status is now even more pronounced, only someone with money to burn could afford to pay for the petrol to run that thing. Of course, my friend may also be a member of some sort of anti-establishment militia waiting for the imminent fall of western civilization where his all terrain vehicle will prove most useful. In this instance I'd point out to him that the rise of petrol prices is surely a sign that the end is nigh so he should stock up on petrol. Or maybe he should just buy a Prius.

probably upset that you hadn't gasped at his massive motor your friend is having another pop at showing how rich he is by drawing attention to fuel prices, no doubt another few dollars on the barrel will prompt an offer to drive you somewhere via a petrol station...

The petro price is high because more and more people drive a Hummer.

Buy BP shares and something more fuel efficient, mate.

Do I win a prize for not wasting any resources by actually following your brief?
