Barista Bullshit!

Interesting to read today here in the US that Starbucks has laid off 220 employees who have been working in field operations and at the coffee retailer's headquarters in Seattle. The news was delivered by the company's chief executive, who told employees today by e-mail. The company will also leave about 380 currently open jobs unfilled.

As there seems to be a Starbucks on just about every street corner these days, I wonder if they might be just a bit better served by closing down some of these joints? The company's Chairman and Chief Executive Howard Schultz announced the 600 job cuts in an e-mail to the company's more than 170,000 employees. Most of the laid-off employees worked in the United States, the company said, adding that none are baristas (which is an uber-trendy name invented by Starbucks to describe the people who actually serve you the outrageously priced Styrofoam containers of coffee.)

Starbucks, which has been struggling amidst the continuing melt down of the American economy, needs to seriously get its act together. When a cup of coffee costs twice as much as a beer you should seriously start thinking about changing your business model!

Maybe they should re-position their "coffee" as "warm milkshakes for big babies with too much pocket money", which would only be telling the truth. I don't think I'd like to be laid off by e-mail, even by Starbucks!

Worse still is being laid-off by voicemail - as happened to some poor unfortunates in the UK recently. 'Hey Janet, it's Bob from Human Remains. I hope you enjoyed your couple of days off - when you pick up this message could you please pack up your sh*t in the cardboard box we have provided. I'm afraid that we've had to make some cutbacks and you're it, because you weren't here, so there was no need for confrontation. Please hand in your security pass and return your laptop - thanks - have a great life." Special Delivery! Envelope full of dog muck for Mr Bob. I'm sure Mr Schultz will be getting some interesting emails and post by return.

Susan & Adam... What you have to realize is that all employees below the rank of Senior Management are just fucking trolls to be hired and laid off at whim. Senior management, meantime are to be cosseted, paid shitloads of money, including giant bonuses, even when they drastically underperform. Then get massive golden parachutes to go away.... And do it all over again somewhere else. Isn't capitalism great? Cheers/George

George - It would appear that capitalism sucks (but you'd know more about that living in the land of greed). It also appears that I'm on the wrong end of this equation - bugger. Ah well, back to hiding under my bridge and scaring passers-by.
