Jeremy Lee on Media

This is the big issue of the day.

I was repelled to see Nick Griffin wearing one, in complete ignorance of the hundreds of thousands of Commonwealth soldiers who died - and continue to die - for Britain, last week.

I also noticed Gordon Brown was wearing one in PMQs last week while Dave was not; whether they will claim for these on expenses is a different matter but it looked like a bit of political one-upmanship.

On telly, too, Sky reporters are wearing them while those on the BBC are not yet. The repugnant Jon Snow on Channel 4 News memorably refuses to wear one.

So is it too early to wear one? Incidentally I've got mine on and think that people who don't wear them at all should be punched in the head.

Been wearing one for a week now, Jeremy. It's never too early. Saw many parents pinning them onto their toddlers this morning. And that was nice.

That's good that it's so ingrained. I agree that it's never too early. And I'd still like to punch Jon Snow in the head for showing such a lack of respect.

not too early and everyone should wear one.

He makes a big thing of his ties, so let's send him one with a nice poppy motif. I see him a lot around town and he looks as fecking miserable as he so obviously is inside.

He rides a bike everywhere I seem to remember. There's a challenge for London's cabbies. That wannabe archaeologist Robinson used to wear a white Poppy - stupid statement I thought. He gets a punch to the head too

Rememberance as political and media competition, doesn't it make you proud. Like Christmas there should be an official start date.

  October 26, 2009

I think you're right - there does seem to be an element of competition too it. Almost as bad taste as Katie Price wanting to visit the troops in Afghanistan for her profile. I'll let Jimmy Carr off for his appalling joke because he does actually give a toss about them

got mine on

Afghanistan is full of white poppies, maybe they should export them instead? Oh hang on, they already do don't they?  I'd prefer it if for once we remembered not to forget rather than had to remember those who died because we forgot again.

  October 26, 2009

Are you seriously advocating that London cab drivers should try and knock Jon Snow off his bike because he chooses not to wear a poppy on air? I don't think you are, are you Jeremy?

  October 26, 2009

Not at all, but they are a patriotic lot those cabbies.

I think Christmas ads should be banned until after Remembrance Day. Tinsel and paper hats have no place at this time of year.

  October 27, 2009

Its never too early to remember those that fought and died for this country. It is however totally unacceptable for those in positions of political power to use them for strategic gain. For this reason an official start date may be necessary.

Robinson. Malcolm Tucker's line about wiping his ar*e on his photo and becoming good at giving him a quiff. Genius.

  October 27, 2009

They're on sale and the ad campaign has started, so it's not too soon - and once that's the case then all media figures should wear them (except the bigot Griffin). The ads this year are superb, very powerful.

Particularly like the way they try and reach out to a wider audience. The Hovis tie-up with poppy loaves is also pretty smart without being overly-commercial - leaves a nice feeling. Good work the RBL
