I'm fairly shocked the London Weekly made it to the streets. It is out and we have copies floating around the office. The verdict is worse than you could imagine. Low quality and badly designed and no match for a good local newspaper let alone the Evening Standard.
I'm non-plussed why anyone would do this? It is full of mistakes from the front page onwards. Why would you publish and print something as poor as this? The front page story about the "Prime minister kicks off the week with a game of rugby" is embarrassing. A lame press release and not really the calling card you would expect from a new paper speaking for Londoners.
It is an immediate turn off for advertisers but amazingly there are some advertisers inside: Sea France, Southern Comfort and some from theatre land. Did they pay?
One question is answered by the cover date which says Feb 5-6th. There is clearly no plan, as originally stated, to print on Friday and Saturday. They clearly plan to distribute this same rag again tomorrow targeting...shoppers? Will it make it to a second issue? Does anyone care? I doubt it.
Anyway take a look.
That's a good start, a typo slap bang in the middle of the front page of your first issue (Phil Tufnel). Someone tell me this is a joke.
"Got any news story?"
Nice.
God, this is shocking but I have to correct Seth - Tufnel is spelled correctly.
Is it some kind of GCSE English project from a local comprehensive or something?
Deliberate typo in your header Gordon to reiterate this pile of recycling? ;)
Rob I will hang my head in shame at that one. Rushing around blogging madly has real downsides -:(
The light hearted paper for light hearted Londoners?
Speechless. Something tells me a stint at the London Weekly isn't going to appear on too many people's CV. Nor do I expect it will turn up as a serious recommendation on too many media plans either...
Gordon, I have to defend you... Phil Tufnel is spelt incorrectly. It's Tufnell according to every site I checked and the cover of his autobiography.

It's shocking they could make a mistake on the front page like that, and ignore hyphens for compound adjectives, and have such poor design and... I could go on all day!
Sorry, I meant to say defend Seth, not Gordon...
Cheers thanks Maisie - it is comically bad. Like a text book example of what not to do. What a shocking waste.
Edgy?!
;-)
Thanks Maisie, I was doubting myself for a bit there :)
This newspaper must be some kind of spoof
...so ...how many typos can you come up with??!
Despite several spoiler attempts by rival newspapers and media houses. The London Weekly kept to it's deadline by launching successfully today. The brand new light hearted free sheet will be distributed weekly each and every Friday and Saturday.
Sports Writer & Co-Founder of Global Publishing Group and the London Weekly, Tony Woodcock commented tonight on ITN about the launch. He said "We have launched a newspaper for young Londoners despite a tough economic climate. We have a long term strategy to expand throughout the UK and are focused and poised to reach our strategy in the next five years". On the mixed reception of the paper, Woodcock added "Anyone who expects perfection for a brand new launch is practically living in a dreamworld. We are very content with the thousands of support we have had from readers who have picked up a copy this morning and this is our main focus to cater for the audience who want to grow with us as we keep improving issue after issue".
The London Weekly, will be distributed weekly Fridays and Saturdays outside most central underground stations from 7am.
Someone told me it was a spoof for Chris Morris' upcoming feature Four Lions. Was quite sad to find out that it was actually a 'serious' paper!
