LinkedIn and Twitter partner up

On its blog today LinkedIn has announced a partnership with Twitter. Much needed I'd say and particularly for LinkedIn, which I think desperately needed a real-time web shot in the arm.

As Biz Stone, Twitter co-founder says in this little video with Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn (they describe the partnership like peanut butter and chocolate, which errrm maybe sounds nice to some - but to me sounds absolutely disgusting and wrong) below the business use case for Twitter has turned out to be much bigger than anyone imagined.

Twitter has proved to be a key plank in every social media strategy being looked at by most brands. Stone is absolutely right when he says this applies equally on the personal level in business and that Twitter has essentially become part of our resume (CV to you mate).

That's why hooking up with LinkedIn makes so much sense. Stone says: "The general idea of putting a little twitter in everything is being able to inject into LinkedIn a little bit more of this fresh here's what's going on with these other things, but with a little bit of a curated sense in terms of your professional life."

When you set your status on LinkedIn (do people do that? I need to use it more) you can now tweet it as well. This could make people more inclined to visit LinkedIn. At the moment it is not a daily visit for many people that I speak to like Twitter or Facebook. Although I'm not a heavy LinkedIn user and I know there are no doubt many more who turn to it on a more regular basis.

LinkedIn says its rolling out features over the next few days and here's what you will get:

1. On LinkedIn

First you join your Twitter and LinkedIn accounts to allow you to share articles you’re reading and letting people view your Twitter account name on your LinkedIn profile. To do that all do is check the Twitter box under your Network Updates box on the homepage and follow a few simple steps.

2. On Twitter

As part of the setup process, you can choose to either send all your tweets or select tweets from Twitter back to LinkedIn as a status update. So that means you might see an article you want to share on LinkedIn, but many not every single tweet.

Hmmm. Really not sure about this. Linked In is far from being a high frequency visit type of network (like you say), and not sure that most people would see the value in either sending all their tweets there or even selected tweets. I already share stuff via my twitter network so what would this add?

Neil i agree there could be a deal of repetition here, but recently have been thinking about how we can use LinkedIn groups and keep them current and updated to warrant a reason for others to join and find value in. For me this deal with Twitter could solve part of that problem in allowing the easy/low maintenance updating of a LinkedIn group that I am involved with that would allow me to share articles with group members who maybe do no use twitter as much as you or I.

OK, take your point - and I can see some value perhaps for B2B in that context but I still think that for most of us this facility already exists via twitter lists and Facebook and that many would feel that tweets would be 'out of context' on Linked In (as someone in my twitter network has already said). Remain to be convinced about this one...

I like keeping Linkedin as just for business only, but Twitter is a mash up of connections I have, and integrating the two networks would be confusing for me and my audiences.

Some "rejects" from a LinkedIn group set up another group and we now meet face-to-face as well as in cyber space.

That's how we have managed to make our LinkedIn profiles evolve.

One member of our new group, on a visit to Europe, made time to meet with us and have a couple of drinks.  Another one is coming from the US in a couple of weeks.

I am setting up a group blog for us to profile funny (hopefully!) anecdotes from the world of recruitment from both sides of the fence.

I don't tweet as I have nothing I think would be of interest to say (must be my PR background!).  But this linkup could be a great way to promote our stuff on LinkedIn and the vlog via Twitter rather than the other way round.

If you would like to part of the blog, called Global Talents, let me know.  In the process of setting it up so no links yet.
