Last year PCMag closed in the States, earlier this year Computer Buyer went and today it is the turn of Personal Computer World, which is to be closed by Incisive Media.I remember when I worked at previous owner VNU, PCW as it was called was huge, but no more. Its August issue, which is in the wacky world of magazines on sale next week, will be its last according to the Press Gazette.
Times change and as the PC market shrinks dramatically there is increasingly no place left on magazine racks for the big PC books.
Dennis Publishing closed Computer Buyer after 18 years in January. The March edition of the title was its last -- although it is still publishing Computer Shopper. The closure of PCW puts the jobs of around 12 staff at risk, including nine in editorial and it follows the move last year by Incisive to axe 50 jobs as some of its markets such as mortgages and finance were hit hard by the downturn. In a statement, Incisive said that ad and sales revenues had both declined to the point that the title was no longer economically viable. The magazine had a circulation of around 54,000 a month last year.Incisive also owns a rather thin looking Computing, which merged with IT Week last year, Computeractive and Accountancy Age.When Ziff Davis closed PCMag last year it said that its plan was to focus growing PCMag online. No word as to whether Incisive will go down this route.
