DigiTales Blog - Mel Carson

Microsoft Advertising's Mel Carson collects stories and insight from the digital media space and brings them back down to earth...

I was watching The One Show on the BBC yesterday and there was a piece about reading and what a feat it was for one of the presenters to have read 160 books in 3 months.

Now that’s a tall order but how many books do you get through in a year if any?

I try and read alternative fiction and business/self-help. So one month it might be a John Grisham and the next Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.

With being online so much, wading through hard drive TV recordings, and now possessing a Microsoft Zune and watching short videos and podcasts on the train in the morning, I find time to read difficult to....erm....find.

Even if I try and read before turning the light out at night, if I’ve had a glass or three of wine it’s the last thing on my mind.

Will books as we know them ever die out? Or will we force ourselves to keep the tradition alive?

I suggest you stop watching The One Show and use that half an hour to read Mel :)

160 books in three months sounds utterly apocryphal to me. That's...tick...tick..about 1 and a third books a day! Ukless of course the 160 books included the complete works of the Mr Men.

This is why I am always so staggered when I talk to people behind mobile TV who seem to think it is the only answer to curing boredom on the commute. WHY CAN'T PEOPLE READ A BOOK?? I get through a book every 10 days simply by reading on the train. Blackberrys et al have a lot to answer for.

This is probably why Sony have released a portable piece of kit that has 160 books already stored on its harddrive ready to read!

I always have at least 2 books on the go at one time.  Normally a  small one to read on the tube to work and a bigger book at home.  I love reading and would much rather read than watch last nights tv on the train!

I love reading Mr Men to my daughters - not eaxactly expanding my horizons, but it's real good fun and hopefully, if i make the effort while their young, my girls will grow up to be more 'avid' readers than me.
