DigiTales Blog - Mel Carson

Microsoft Advertising's Mel Carson collects stories and insight from the digital media space and brings them back down to earth...
Anyone who saw The Apprentice last night would have been amazed at how the "bizniz yoof" of today obviously have little grasp of technology...

What was all that stress and paranoia about when it came to getting some photos off a memory card on to a laptop and printing them off.

Are the Facebook fashionistas that pc illiterate? How do they feel now having exposed their Random inAccessible Memory to the man that brought us the Amstrad E-Mailer Telephone?!

Admitting on television that you are "technically useless" doesn't hold you in good stead for the big digital world of cunning corporations, when you're supposed to be demonstrating your business experience and acumen.

Get down to your local library on Saturday and take a course!

Alternatively there is a series of books with the word "dummies" in the title....

Passing judgement on all young people in the business world based upon watching a few technophobes on TV is ridiculous. I would think it is safe to say that anyone deemed as a "Facebook fashionista" clearly aren't PC illiterate as they have the knowledge to upload their pics to the site in the first place, which would involve getting them off their camera... Nevermind.

That's exactly my point Steve - I can't understand how they wouldn't know how to transfer photos given the activities proliferation thanks to social networking. And you're right, maybe the contestants don't represent the youth in business and their clumsiness is exactly why we find the viewing so compelling.....

I found the whole experience quite painful. It looked like one of them was going to cry at one point! Irrelevant of whether any of them are members of social networking sites (which I would believe they actually are), how difficult is it to work out the simple process of getting photos from memory card to computer? I agree with Mel, I think it's addictive viewing purely for the fact that it's clearly not an accurate representation of youths in business and it's more like a Gavin and Stacey, a bit of a piss take out of a social stereotype.
