UK Employers are starting to ban access to social network sites like Facebook during work hours but are they missing a trick?

While it seems reasonable enough for employers to want to ensure their staff are as productive as possible banning Facebook might not be the answer. In fact Facebook and social media sites could be a way of staff making better use of their time.

More progressive companies are looking at the technologies behind social media sites, their features and applications and are considering what they can learn from them. Could social media applications be used for work projects; team building or as new platforms for talking with customers, partners and suppliers? They can. Anyone got any interesting examples or thoughts?

Facebook has allowed unrivalled networking and sharing of ideas for our business. Agencies such as Zeus Jones and Anomaly have their own accounts which circumvent accusations of being cynical mktg tools by providing some really good content, contacts and ideas. Check out the folloiwn groups on FB - Plannersphere, PSFK and Anomaly. It is also invaluable for freelance talent!

HI Duncan, That's really interesting. Can you give me some examples. What kind of ideas do you share? I have looked at Plannersphere and it's fascinating. Do you get clients involved? Justin

Sure. Try looking up Anomaly and Zeus Jones on facebook (american new model agencies in the same mould as us). We use it to find talent (who, if they are on their and showing their ideas/work are more naturally a good fit for us), we link to our company use of slideshare (www.slideshare.net/callcottMarketing). When I get time I also try to contribute to the group 'Planning for good' who put ethical/charity briefs up to gain insight and ideas from the planning community pro bono. We do get clients involved in our way of working but not via FB just yet, although we do have some clients as friends (breaking down that awful un-natural fakeness of many agencies and their staffers).
